Our Story
From Church House to Community Landmark
The Castle Inn in Hurst isn’t just a gastropub, t’s a living piece of village history. Dating back to the 16th century, the building was originally known as the Church House, serving as a meeting place and residence closely tied to St. Nicholas Church just across the road. It later became known as The Bunch of Grapes before adopting its current name, The Castle Inn.
In its earliest days, the inn was owned by the church and used to raise ecclesiastical funds by selling ale. One of its most intriguing features is the Coffin Room, where bodies were laid out before burial, a reflection of its deep connection to the church and local customs.
The Castle Inn is a Grade II listed building, recognised for its architectural and historical significance. It retains original timber framing and boasts classic English country charm, with a large tiled roof and prominent chimney stacks.
The pub also adjoins what is believed to be the oldest bowling green in Berkshire, where King Charles I is said to have played during visits to the area. Over the centuries, The Castle Inn has evolved alongside the village, serving as a hub for locals, travellers, and even royalty.
Today, The Castle Inn continues its legacy as a cosy, family friendly gastropub, independent from any brewery, allowing us to offer a rotating selection of ales from across the UK. With roaring log burners in winter, dog-friendly spaces, and a warm welcome year round, we’re proud to be part of Hurst’s story and yours.
